At the risk of coming across as one of WHO'S neurotic, nodding dog PC wankers, what was the attendance numbers? In the past it's been estimated at around a million attendees (unless that is a faulty recollection). The stats need more context.

Glastonbury had 36 arrests, 100k people
Carnival 275 arrests, 2 million people.
Proportionally Glastonbury has around twice the number of arrests than Carnival.
Glastonbury is very expensive, mostly middle class ticketed event

Carnival is free.

You will see just as many stabbings/fights if not more at Southend on a Friday night or any clubbing hot spots up and down the country.

For something of the magnitude of Carnival its probably the safest event ion its type in the world.

But let's not let facts spoil a good rant! Ban the Carnival I say!!!

A few stabbings and a number of women getting sexually assaulted is a small price to pay to keep our carnival friends happy.

Meanwhile let's concentrate on a real story and talk about some Spanish bloke kissing a woman on the lips.

Depending on the weather there’s normally between 1-1.5million over two days, probably about 40% Sunday which is kids day and the really big turnout Monday. I’ve been many times and there’s very little trouble at the actual carnival which ends at 7pm, most of the agg is after when about half million people have been drinking all day long and it moves into all the boozers

In 2009 there were 2 stabbed and god knows how many arrests at West Ham millwall maybe we should move that to Hyde park and charge £150 a ticket.
As said Glastonbury has about a fifth of the attendance and far more arrests but let’s not talk about that type of “them”

Heading back to me mum’s in Essex after another brilliant carnival. Two days skanking to some pukka roots and culture, EARTH SHAKER style.

360 has it right. With a little perspective and no piss stained hysteria, NHC is one of the safest places to have a really great time.

I sometimes work with a fella who lives in the area
They employ security and board outside the complex he lives in but still have issues with people gaining access pissing and taking drugs in the outside communal area and in the past he has been bottled and threatened with s knife when challenging people damaging property.
Some of his neighbours move out for the weekend to avoid the hassle and stress of getting in and out.
As he says it is a great spectacle for the most part but not much fun when your stuck in the middle of it and your properties under threat.
Monday night particularly after the sun goes down is when it all kicks off.

360, your numbers and stats are massively incorrect and im not coming at this from the perspective that I think the Notting Hill Carnival needs to be cancelled as I actually agree with you that an event of that size the numbers reported are not problematic and can be expected from anything that attracts over 1 million people.

Glastonbury has a daily capacity of circa 100,000 people but runs from Wednesday to Monday so if you really want to calculate the attendance then you are looking at a figure closer to half a million attending Glastonbury. Equally the NHC is attended by around 1.5million across 3 days according to official sources, whether you believe them or not. If you want to compare the two at least do it accurately rather than fudge them to suit your argument.

As I said I actually think NHC is a good event that is a great addition to the summer calendar and only gets bad press due to people's issue with the racial origination of it.

Lastly, calling it 'Carnival' is one of the cringiest things a middle aged, middle class man can do, its not cool.

I apologise, I got the figures wrong for Glastonbury if we talk about it being held for a week or so. I think its 220k capacity for the whole week, I think I saw the an article saying 100k but that was for 1 day attendance,.

Carnival is def 2m over the days its on,.

Its hard to compare directly as you're not comparing a day event vs another, so you can really only use total volume of attendees for Bothe events.

So proportionally its the same amount of arrests.
But my point still stands considering the nature of both events. Ticketed, expensive, middle class, in the middle of nowhere etc..

But we are both agree that the arrest thing is over egged about carnival compared to other events.

Also, I call it carnival because of all my friends call it carnival, and we all know which one we are talking about. It's part of our community. Lots of us have even going since we were children.

Couple of my mates are just normal people/builders, one of whom happens to be non-white who have to move their familiies out for five days every year as its complete carnage - and they always fear what is going to be there or not when they get back- the whole siutauion is unsafe and inconsisent with what it was first set-up to be- needs a complete rejig
